This is Germanys 3rd oldest zoo and some of the buildingsare more than a century old. The garden has allways been known for its monkeys and apes, especially lemurs and South American monkeys have allways been a highlight. The ape groupe also is interesting as the Bonobo.Els it has an interesting aquarium and rareties like the okapi, the musc ox and black rhinos

There are several daily feeding shows, for the time please ask at the till station. Kids will love the petting zoo.

 

Chronic:
 

  • 1860: Establishment of the corporation Zoological Garden Colonge, at the initiative of the Higher School teacher Dr. Caspar Garthe.
  • 1863: Construction of the old elephant house in Moorish style. Initially it was conceived as giraffes and antelopes house. Two years later it got an annex for elephants. It is the oldest building in the Cologne zoo today.
  • 1887: Establishment of the Sea Lion Rock
  • 1899: Construction of large bird house which today houses tamarins and capuchin monkeys under the name " South America House "
  • 1914: Establishment of a baboon rock in the style introduced by Carl Hagenbeck as panoramic and free-view enclosures.
  • 1914-36: During the First World War and the subsequent Great Depression of the expansion of the Cologne Zoo stagnated. The City of Cologne took over the majority of shares and kept the zoo before it was forced to close. The city of Cologne still bears the loss cover.
  • 1945-47: Closing and reopening of the almost completely destroyed zoo.
  • 1957: The city of Cologne presents an ideal plan for the future redesign of the zoo. The area is enlarged to 20 hectares, is four times greater than in the founding year 1860.
  • 1960: Opening of the extended grounds to mark the 100th anniversary of the Cologne Zoo.
  • 1963: With the opening of the zoo school thezoo for the first time offers educational programs for schools and kindergartens.
  • 1971: The aquarium is opened. First, it is self-contained.
  • 1973: Opening of the lemur house. Due to its numerous breeding success, the house enjoys a worldwide reputation today.
  • 1976: The Washington Convention enters into force. Zoological Gardens are therefore prohibited to import endangered species from the wild.
  • 1981: The " Ruffed lemur - emblem " represents a new logo. It symbolizes a new beginning with zoo director Professor Gunther Nogge planning and implementing numerous development and expansion projects in his era.
  • 1982: Founding of the association "Friends of the Cologne Zoo ."
  • 1985: Opening of the jungle house for apes on the occasion of the 125th anniversary.
  • 1997: The last Polar Bear takes off from the zoo. Undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Bochum use the former enclosure from now on for a seal research project. Opening of the owls monastery.
  • 2000: The RAINFOREST, the new Tropical House for Southeast Asian animals and plants is opened . For the first time the visitor can experience without barrier birds, reptiles and bats in an activity hall. At the same time, the zoo accepts a conservation project in Phong Nha - Ke Bang, Vietnam.
  • 2002: Opening of small mammals enclosures for otters, meerkats and raccoons
  • 2004: The Elephant Park Cologne is opened. It offers Asian elephants the most spacious enclosures north of the Alps. Covering an area of ​​two hectares, up to 20 animals are living in natural social groups.
  • 2006: April brought the birth of Marlar, the first baby elephant in the new Elephant Park , the Cologne Zoo has a visitor record. The young female elephant is the favorite of zoo visitors, and is part of the new zoo logo for identification of the Cologne zoo .
  • 2007: Theo Pagel is the new director of the Cologne Zoo and triggers after 26 years Professor Gunther Nogge from the board.
  • 2010: The Hippodrome opens, home for hippopotamus, crocodile and several bird species
  • 2012: Giant Anteaters get an enclosure
  • 2014: The Clemens Hof, a small farm, opens
  • 2017: bantengs get a new wnclosure
  • 2019: The Asian lion enclosure is renovated
  • 2020: The enclosure for Amur tigers is renovated

After paying the entrance fee we see the onager on the right, if you have taken the tram, you could see these animals from outside as well. Next to them is the small carnivore area with racoons, meerkats and the European otter. Larger carnivores are the following with sun bears, grizzlys and the opposite living cheetahs. Next to the bears we find the lesser panda. In the middel of the zoo are several larger lakes, the first are for water fowl, cranes and bell deer. The beautyfull building in russian stile is the South American house, out side we find parrots but inside several species of tamarins ans cappuchin monkeys. Out side again its time to look at the South Amercan tapir and theire neighbours, the giant ant eater. Opposite we find the Okapi, a forrest giraffe from Africa. Turning left at the Grevy's zebra we are having the baboon rock in front of us. Oposite are several antelope and deer species, as well as storks and cranes. Seeing the zebras once more and behind them we find the large cats, like lions, Amur tigers, Persian leopards and snow leopards. Entering now the next  building, we are situated in a large rain forrest. This house especially show the animals from South-east Asia and in the first part you walk among birds, bats and the mouse deer. In the following gallery there are several cages with animals like the lar gibbon and Matschie's tree-kangaroo. Out side again we just turn right to enter the ape house, home to the gorilla, bonobo and orangutan, as well as red-shanked douc (beeing the only ones in Europe) and the Eastern black-and-white colobus.  Outside we meet the alpaca to the right and the Asian elephant to the left. Following the sound we then see the Californian sea lion. Next is the bird area with several aviaries, showing different eco systems. Here we meet the Siberian crane, Congo peacocks and abdim storks, just to mention a few. Opposite we are having Prezewalski's horse, a bird show arena and the penguins. Next to aviaries we find an old castle in ruins, home to several species of owls. They are followed by the bison and the musc ox. Then we can look at the reticulated giraffes and the impalas.  The zoos oldest house is home for the black rhino. Next we find the lemur house, home to bamboo langurs and different subspecies of ruffed lemurs, to mention a few.  Theire neighbours are the hippos, sharing theire enclosure with siatungas. Inside the hippo-house we find crocodiles, bats and tupaias. Heading now for the exit its time to see flamingos, cranes and the Bactrian camels. The last area inside is an area showing old local farm animals. Out side of the zoo, opposite the entrance we find the aquarium. you ticket is valid for it as well. On the ground floor we find several species of fish, mabe nore interesting is the upper level with reptiles, amphibians and insects.


DE: Dieser Zoo ist der 3. älteste von Deutschland. Er hat immer noch Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahundert wie das schöne Südamerikhaus, einer Russischen kirche nachempfunden und das Nashornhaus im Moorischen stil von 1863. Nennenswerte Arten sind u.a. die Kleideraffen (die einzigen in Europa), Bonobos und Okapis

DK: Denne have er tysklands 3. ældste. I haven finder man stadigvæk bygninger fra det 19. århundred, som det smukke Sydamerika hus, der minder om en russik kirke og næsehornshuset fra 1863 i maurisk stil. Af interessante arter skal bl.a, nævnes kostumelanguren (de eneste i Europa), dværgchimpansen og okapien.
