Prague Zoo is the most visited zoological garden in the Czech Republic. The grounds stretch from a lush river valley up a steep, rocky escarpment to rolling meadows. The views at the summit are spectacular. Animals range from penguins, sea lions, lions, tigers and elephants to Markhor and Ibex - superbly held in mountain enclosures. Giraffes also have a huge valley to roam through. You meet  rare animals like the komodo dragon's, gorillas, kiang's, anoa's and brown hyena's


  • On the occasion of the marriage of prince Rudolph and princess Stephanie of Belgium, an appeal to establish a zoological garden in Prague was published in the newspapers by count Sweerts-Spork.


  • A council for establishing a zoological garden in the Kings’ Game Park was founded (not realised).


  • A memorial treatise of the Cooperative for establishing a zoological and acclimatisation garden was published. The Kinský’s garden was chosen out of ten suggested localities but that was the end of it all.


  • The grammar school professor Jiří Janda entered the scene and started preparing a zoo on the Štvanice Island.


  • At the meeting of the advisory board for mathematics and natural sciences at the Ministry of education and national enlightenment, a committee was established to start the preparatory work on the establishment of the Prague zoological garden.


  • The important landowner Alois Svoboda donated the land in Troja declaring that a zoological garden was to be built there.


  • The professor Jiří Janda was put in charge by the above-mentioned ministry to start the preparations for establishing the zoo.


  • The Business, Purchasing and Building Cooperative of the Zoological Garden was founded.


  • 8 hectares of the future zoo were fenced towards the end of the year.


  • The owner of the Rebernigg circus donated the lioness Šárka to the zoo. As there was no suitable dormitory for her in the zoo, she lived as well as some of the other inhabitants of the zoo in the villa of professor Janda in Troja.


  • On 28th September “The building site of the zoological garden” was opened for the public and in the sunny afternoon the first visitors entered the gate.
  • The administrative building was built at the main entrance.
  • The Janda’s aviary for birds of prey was built.
  • The arrival of the female wolf Lotta who was the first animal to appear within the area of the zoo.
  • The arrival of the first Przewalski’s horses (Mink and Ali).


  • The arrival of the first tigers (Mitau and Bengali).


  • The arrival of the elephant Baby, hippopotamus Petr and rhinoceros Max.
  • The first tiger cubs were born.


  • The first lions (Ctirad and Šárka) came to the zoo.
  • The actor Vlasta Burian donated the sea lions Hýta and Batul to the zoo.


  • The pavilion of carnivors was built under the rock.


  • The zoo staff started organising circus performances.
  • The first young Andean vulture in the world was hatched and reared.


  • The so-called farm, a complex of barns and other buildings, was built.


  • The March flood reached up to the pavilion of carnivores


  • The first cub of polar bear was artificially bred in the world (the female Ilun).


  • The female hippopotamus Zuzana came from the bombed Berlin.


  • The pavilion of monkeys was built.
  • The first chimpanzee came, the female called Moke.
  • The zoo came under the management of the state administration, the city council of Prague and was controlled by the Ministry of Information and Enlightenment.


  • The arrival of the first giraffe, the female Lenka.


  • The pavilion of small animals was built.


  • Dr. Zdeněk Veselovský was appointed the director of the zoo. Under his leadership, the Prague zoo got among the best zoos in the world and it also reached some world class successes in the area of breeding and scientific research.


  • The Prague zoo was appointed to keep the International studbook of Przewalski’s horses.


  • The arrival of the first orangutan, the female Soňa.


  • The arrival of the first gorilla, the male Titan.


  • The Janda’s aviary for birds of prey collapsed under the heavy snow.


  • The WZO conference took place in Prague (The International Union of The Directors of Zoological Gardens) and professor Bernhard Grzimek took part in it.
  • The new pavilion of big mammals was opened (elephants, hippopotamuses and rhinoceroses).
  • The orangutan Kama was born.


  • The first cubs of cheetahs were born (the second breeding in the world).


  • The arrival of the first aardwarks in the history of the zoo (Bojsa and Nebojsa).


  • The pavilion of big cats was opened.


  • The new exhibit called America was opened and the exhibits of polar bears and black bears were reconstructed.
  • The EZE conference took place in Prague (European Association of Zooeducators).


  • The pavilion of big tortoises was opened.


  • The pavilion of monkeys was demolished.


  • The first artificial breeding of a Przewalski’s horse in the world.
  • Two new pavilions were opened – the African house and the Gorillas’ pavilion.
  • The EAZA conference in the zoo.


  • The August flood affected almost half of the area of the zoo.


  • Two new elephants came (the male Nagathan, the female Praya) and the male lowland gorilla Richard arrived.


  • The new pavilion Indonesian jungle was opened (29th November).
  • The first young of the lowland gorilla in Czech zoos history was born (13th December).

After entering the zoo we go towards the Red Panda and the turn right to enter the Indonesian Djungle. Its home to the Orangutan, Komodo dragons and the rarely shown ferret badger. Out side again we go up to look at the Polar Bears and follow the road on the left. Soon getting to the Prezewalski horse, once almost extinct, but becourse of this zoo you have aprox 2000 animals on this planet. Turning right  we see Bactrian Camels, bison, wisents, takins and anoas. Across there European animals like the moose, reindeer and the wolf. Heading straight forward we have cassowarys and kangaroos.Now we reached the small carnivore house with e.g. otters. Then we are entering the African House with animals like the Honey Badger, talapoins, bat-eared fox as well as pancake tortoises. Outside again we are having siatungas and after a while coatis and reas. Turning right we going on the other side of the street, where we have a big savannah withj giraffes, zebras etc, as well as aardvarks and red river hogs. Going back to the coati we turn right and look at the maned wolf and the brownhyena. Keping on beeing on the right side we soon meet deer, Amur tigers and Pere Davids Deer. Going on the the bridge then we look at som wildboar and som deer.  Then going a while again we are reaching the Mountain sheep and goats, like the Tahr and the Goral. On the other side of the stream we are having several lakes and aviarys with birds, it's here we find cranes, pelicans and Shoe-bills among others. In front of we us we are having the big cats house with clouded leopards, Malayan tigers and fishing cats among others. Inside there is a terrarium. Outside again we are having first cheetahs and then aldabra tortoises. Keeping right we se the Gorillas and sloths. Passing the tortoises again  we are having a small birdhouse in front of us with birds from Sichuan in China. Going right again outside we reach the Mini-zoo where kids can see farm animals and pet goats. Then we look at the Malaysian tapir while following the enclosure. Following is on the right side the birds of prey aviarys. At the flamingo we turn left and have several islands with monkeys like the colobus. We also finde the rare shown Ganges gharials. Then we are having the pachyderm house with hippos, Asian elephants and South American Tapirs. In the house there is a small terrarium. Then we have som aviaries with phesants and at the vulture aviary we turn right to se some parrots. At the red panda we turn right once more and then can enter a lemur enclosure with ring-tailed lemurs. The last animals we now are going to se are the penguins and the sea lions.

DE: Der Zoo von Prag ist zwar der älteste oder der Zoo mit der grösten Artenvielfallt in der Tschechei, aber ist trotzdem einer der besten von Europa. Er zeigt den selten gezeigten Ganges Gavial, die Braune Hyäne und dass Prezewalski Pferd, dass der dank der bemühungen des Prager Zoos von 3 Tieren die der Zoo erhielt bist der heute Weltweit  knap 2000 Tiere Population heran wuchs.

DK: Prags zoo er hverken landest ældste eller den med flest arter, men gælder aligevel som en af europas beste. Der vises den sjælden viste ganges gavial, den brune hyæne og prezewalskihesten. Denne art skylder son overlevelse Prag zoo som startede med at få 3 dyr som er forfædre til de knap 2000 dyr der findes på verdensplan.
